 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'nija 'peres] (April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena was an American Tejano singer. The "Queen Tejano music", her contributions in music and fashion have made her one of the most well-known Mexican-American entertainers of all time. Billboard magazine placed her third on their 2020 list of the "Greatest Latino Artists" based on Latin album releases and Latin charts of songs. Some media outlets described her as the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices. Her clothes choices also makes her one of the most prominent Latin artists. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. She was often criticised in the 1980s , and was denied bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, which was a male-dominated genre. After winning the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained notoriety. She was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and released her debut album, self-titled in the same year. During that time, her brother became her primary music producer as well as songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) which reached number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. It was praised by music critics as being the "breakthrough" album of her career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor", became one of her most popular famous songs. Live! Live! Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It was one of America's most listened-to Latin albums. It was praised by critics as being the catalyst for Tejano music's first marketable era since it was one of the most sought-after Latin music subgenres at the time.
